As retirement approaches, many individuals dream of hitting the open road to explore stunning landscapes and create unforgettable memories. Vickie and I are no exception; we plan at least two road trips each year to soak in the beauty of diverse American scenery. One of our most cherished adventures is our annual fall foliage trip to Vermont and Maine. This tradition has brought us immense joy, allowing us to witness nature's vibrant transformation year after year. A couple of years ago, Vickie and I embarked on a remarkable journey from the Eastern Coast to Key West, and we are excited to plan another adventure next year. Vickie also wants to plan a classic Route 66 road trip!
With autumn's vibrant colors, breathtaking coastal routes, and iconic highways, the U.S. offers numerous road trip options. Here are five of our top picks that are perfect for retirees looking to explore and enjoy.
1. The Pacific Coast Highway, California
The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) runs along California's stunning coastline, featuring breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, charming seaside towns, and rugged cliffs. This scenic getaway is perfect for anyone who loves coastal beauty and outdoor activities.
Starting in San Francisco, this route takes you through key spots such as Monterey, Big Sur, and Santa Barbara, culminating in Los Angeles. Be sure to stop at famous sights like the Bixby Creek Bridge—a marvel of engineering standing 714 feet above the canyon—and Hearst Castle, where you can tour the extravagant home of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst.
The PCH also lends itself to spontaneous stops. For example, you could enjoy fresh calamari in Monterey or hike to dramatic viewpoints in Big Sur. Vickie and I especially cherish the cozy beach towns where we can shop, dine, and relax with an ocean view.

2. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina
If you're a nature lover, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a must-see. Renowned for its incredible views and vibrant autumn foliage, this scenic highway meanders through the Appalachian Mountains, linking Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.
Covering over 469 miles, the parkway offers moments of peace with countless hiking trails, picnic spots, and overlooks to soak in the stunning vistas. Vickie and I love to take Koa, our Anatolian Shepherd, to stop by waterfalls and check out the local arts and craft shops along the route.
The parkway shines particularly bright in the fall when the leaves transform into dazzling shades of red, orange, and yellow. In fact, studies show that up to 90% of visitors come during the fall to witness the breathtaking foliage. Make sure to bring your camera and take time to enjoy the serene scenery as you navigate this enchanting route.

3. Route 66: The Historic Drive
Few road trips are as iconic as Route 66. Often called the "Main Street of America," this legendary highway stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica, covering over 2,400 miles filled with diverse landscapes, historical landmarks, and quirky roadside attractions.
When planning our Route 66 journey, Vickie and I look forward to experiencing the unique charm of each state. From classic diners serving homemade pies to old gas stations showcasing retro signs and vibrant towns, every segment of Route 66 tells an important piece of American history.
This memorable journey offers nostalgia—picture Elvis Presley music playing on the radio and the thrill of spontaneous stops. Vickie is particularly excited to capture a photo of the iconic "Route 66" sign at the end of the highway in Santa Monica. We plan to celebrate completing this journey in style!

4. The Great Ocean Road, Australia (Bonus for Adventure Seekers)
While our focus is on U.S. road trips, those willing to venture further can consider the Great Ocean Road in Australia. This breathtaking coastal drive features rugged cliffs, the famous Twelve Apostles, and rich biodiversity.
Though not in the U.S., this trip offers a refreshing change of pace for adventurous retirees. Vickie and I have already added this dream destination to our post-retirement bucket list!
Along the Great Ocean Road, you'll discover charming towns, scenic lookouts, and opportunities for wildlife sightings. With kangaroos and koalas, this route is perfect for nature enthusiasts. Remember to explore at your own pace, taking advantage of the various stops along this picturesque drive.
5. The Florida Keys Scenic Highway
A couple of years ago, Vickie and I took our then new RV on its inaugural road trip to Key West which left us enchanted, making the Florida Keys Scenic Highway a must-visit for anyone seeking a tropical paradise. This unique drive connects the islands of the Florida Keys, offering stunning views of turquoise waters, lush landscapes, and breathtaking sunsets.
Known as the “Overseas Highway,” this route spans approximately 113 miles, with each island presenting unique experiences. From snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs to enjoying fresh seafood at local eateries, there's truly something for everyone.
Vickie and I appreciate the laid-back vibe of the Keys. Whether relaxing on the beach, exploring state parks, or trying our hand at fishing, the options are endless. Don't forget your camera for the iconic sunset views, where the sky dazzles with bursts of color over the ocean.
Embarking on Your Road Trip
Taking a road trip during retirement is an exciting way to discover new landscapes and create lasting memories. With routes like the Pacific Coast Highway, Blue Ridge Parkway, and iconic Route 66, the exploration opportunities in the U.S. are vast.
Vickie and I cherish each journey we undertake, finding joy in travel and excitement in shared experiences.
