Ketchikan, Alaska, is more than just a cruise stop; it’s a vibrant town filled with natural beauty, rich Native culture, and intriguing history. This year, Vickie and I decided to skip organized excursions and explore Ketchikan independently. We wanted to enjoy this picturesque location without spending extra on tours. If you’re planning to visit Ketchikan during your cruise, here are five free activities to enjoy during your stay—perfect for a five-hour exploration.

1. Stroll Along the Waterfront

A great way to kick off your Ketchikan adventure is with a peaceful walk along the waterfront. The boardwalk, adorned with colorful shops and buildings, reflects the town’s strong maritime heritage.

Take a moment to pause. From the boardwalk, you can witness the bustling harbor, where fishing boats and majestic cruise ships coexist. Did you know that Ketchikan can see over 200 days of rain a year? The fresh Alaskan air can be invigorating, especially on clear days.

As you walk, keep your eyes peeled for the numerous local art installations and totem poles that celebrate the area's Native American heritage. You’ll discover unique photo opportunities, whether capturing the striking mountains or the quaint boats bobbing in the water.

2. Visit the Totem Heritage Center

For those eager to learn more about Ketchikan’s rich culture, the Totem Heritage Center is an essential stop. Located within walking distance from the waterfront, this center is dedicated to preserving the intricate totem poles and Native culture.

Best of all, admission is free. At the center, you can explore several historic totem poles, each telling a story through its craftsmanship. The significance of these carvings runs deep within indigenous culture, making this a unique learning experience.

The center frequently showcases additional exhibits that highlight Native art and artifacts, further enriching your knowledge of the history and traditions of Ketchikan’s indigenous people.

3. Explore Creek Street

Creek Street is one of the most well-known spots in Ketchikan, featuring charming wooden boardwalks along a babbling creek. Once home to the town's red-light district, it now offers quaint shops filled with local crafts and artwork.

As you wander down the scenic boardwalk, you will come across the famous Dolly's House Museum, a restored brothel that tells an important part of Ketchikan's past. Exploring the area is free and offers beautiful vistas of the flowing creek and unique buildings.

In late summer and early fall, you may even witness salmon swimming upstream to spawn. It's a wildlife event that draws both locals and tourists alike.

4. Appreciate the Local Wildlife

Ketchikan is a paradise for animal lovers. While you're probably not going to stumble upon grizzly bears downtown, there are plenty of chances for wildlife spotting.

Eagles frequently soar overhead, and you might see sea lions sunbathing on the docks or playful otters splashing in the water. If you’re willing to walk a bit, consider heading to nearby parks like the Saxman Native Village. This area features walking paths where you can enjoy nature and watch wildlife in their natural habitats.

The serene environment offers a perfect backdrop for reflection, allowing you to appreciate Alaska's breathtaking landscapes.

5. Discover the Local Art Scene

Ketchikan pulses with creativity, making its art scene wonderfully accessible. As you stroll through town, pay attention to the many galleries that showcase a wide range of art, including traditional Native crafts and modern works.

While some galleries charge for specific exhibits, browsing is generally free. You may also find local shops featuring unique pieces crafted by nearby artists, where you can admire their skills firsthand.

Keep your eyes open for public art installations sprinkled throughout Ketchikan. These pieces often reflect the town's spirit and history. If you’re lucky, you might even encounter street musicians and performers adding a lively touch to your exploration.
