Every third weekend of May, the charming town of Damascus, Virginia, transforms into a bustling hub for outdoor enthusiasts as it hosts the annual Trail Days celebration. Nestled on the Appalachian Trail, this vibrant community draws in hikers and vacationers alike for an unforgettable weekend of activities, food, and camaraderie.
Trail Days is not just a festival but a celebration of the hiking spirit. It brings together vendors, a lively parade, and representatives from popular hiking brands. This year, Vickie and I had the pleasure of attending with Koa, our beloved Anatolian Shepherd dog, and the experience was one we won’t soon forget.

A Community Spirit
Damascus embodies a sense of community that shines during Trail Days. The streets buzz with cheerful visitors, from seasoned hikers sharing tales of their adventures to newcomers eager to learn about the trail. The layout of the town makes it easy to explore the many vendor booths lined along the main street.
As we strolled through the market, we discovered various outdoor gear vendors, food trucks, and local artisans showcasing their crafts. Well-known brands like Osprey, Garmin, and Patagonia had booths, eager to engage with customers and showcase their latest products. For instance, Osprey’s latest backpack model features a 50-liter capacity and weighs just 3 pounds, making it an attractive option for both short hikes and long treks.
Each vendor at Trail Days had a unique story to tell and shared a passion for the outdoor lifestyle. It wasn’t just about selling products; it was about sharing experiences and fostering a love for nature.

A Fun-Filled Parade
No community celebration is complete without a parade, and Trail Days truly delivers! The parade is one of the highlights of the weekend, showcasing the spirit of adventure and blend of community among hikers.
Participants wore colorful outfits, from outdoor-themed costumes to inventive interpretations of life on the trail. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter and cheers from attendees. According to estimates, around 1,500 people come to witness this parade, making it a truly special event celebrating shared passions.
Outdoor Activities for All
Trail Days offers a wealth of outdoor activities suitable for all ages. One standout opportunity is hiking the surrounding trails, including the renowned Appalachian Trail. Did you know that approximately 2 million people hike a segment of this trail each year? Its accessibility and breathtaking views make it a favorite.
For those interested in cycling, the Virginia Creeper Trail, a scenic 17-mile bike path, welcomes cyclists of all skill levels. Numerous bike vendors also offer rental services, making the trail accessible for everyone.
On one sunny May day, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and hiked a short section of the Appalachian Trail, enjoying stunning vistas and vibrant spring blooms. Our dog, Koa, relished the adventure, and the energy of the trails filled us with joy.

A Pet-Friendly Environment
Traveling with pets can be challenging, but Damascus makes it easy for pet owners to join in the fun. The town is notably dog-friendly, with many businesses eagerly welcoming furry companions.
Throughout Trail Days, various vendors provided treats for dogs, ensuring that they felt included in the festivities. Locals were seen enjoying walks with their dogs, taking advantage of the ample green spaces.
For Vickie and me, being able to bring Koa with us added immense joy to our experience. His enthusiasm mirrored our excitement, making every moment even more special.
Accommodations and Facilities
While Damascus offers a rich experience during Trail Days, it’s essential to plan ahead for accommodations. The town has a limited number of hotels and campgrounds, which tend to fill up quickly as the event approaches.
